Fit to Teach: The Positive Impact of Exercise on English Teachers’ Effectiveness
The article “Structural Modeling of EFL/ESL Teachers’ physical activity, mental health, psychological well-being, and Self-efficacy” by Min Guo and Shaohua Jiang investigates the structural relationship between physical activity (PA), mental health, well-being, and self-efficacy among ESL/EFL teachers. The study involved 364 Chinese English language teachers and utilized mental health, physical activity, psychological well-being, and self-efficacy instruments for data collection. The data was analyzed using Smart PLS software.
The results showed that PA directly predicts teachers’ mental health and well-being, but the direct structural relationship between teachers’ PA and self-efficacy was not confirmed. However, it was found that teachers’ PA contributes to their self-efficacy by enhancing their mental and psychological well-being. The total effect of teachers’ PA on their self-efficacy was significant. Additionally, mental health and psychological well-being strongly influenced teachers’ self-efficacy.
The study concludes that regular weekly physical activity can help EFL/ESL teachers foster their mental health, psychological well-being, and self-efficacy. These findings have theoretical and practical significance for teachers, trainers, and educational psychologists.
The study is well-conducted with a robust methodology, and the use of Smart PLS software adds credibility to the findings. However, it would be interesting to see if the results can be generalized to teachers of other subjects and in different cultural contexts. Additionally, future research could explore the specific types of physical activities that are most beneficial for teachers’ mental health and self-efficacy. Overall, the article is a valuable addition to the literature on teacher well-being and professional development.
